The Epic Games Store has definitely generated some controversy this year, but they’ve also implemented some really cool features to try and bring in more gamers to use their launcher. One of these is the free games they offer up every now and then with the next batch being two of the best indie titles in recent memory, Hyper Light Drifter and Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden.
Hyper Light Drifter
A beautiful side scrolling game that pays tribute to the 16-bit era, Hyper Light Drifter is a challenging yet welcoming game that encourages the player to explore as much as possible. It was originally available only for PC, but has since been ported to numerous platforms, with the most recent being the Nintendo Switch. Not terribly high on story, Hyper Light Drifter lets it’s visuals do the talking.
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden
Mutant Year Zero is an isometric squad based title similar to the Xcom series, with a little more humor. Instead of controlling human soldiers, you command anthropomorphic animals to flank, stealth, and force their way through enemy territory. Same as the Xcom franchise, you can also spam the save feature (save-scumming) to ensure that any mistake you make is instantly history.
Usually the company gives away one game each month, but recently they’ve been offering two for just one week. Both titles are available from now until August 22, which is next Thursday. After that another indie darling, Fez, will be free to download. If you have any interest in these games, you can’t go wrong with the price of free.
You can get these two free titles by heading over to Epic Games and downloading the launcher in the blue link on the top right corner that says “Get Epic Games.” You’ll need the Epic Launcher to play the free games, but you can also claim them from the website as well by clicking on the game page and clicking the “get” button, similar to other online storefronts. You can also do this from the store tab in the Epic Games Launcher.
Once you’ve installed the Epic Games Launcher you will find the free titles in your library.
